A Career In Farming

26 August 2015

In support of the Welsh Government’s goal to expand farming and food production in the Principality by 30% over the next 5 years, Careers Wales are encouraging young people to consider a career in the industry.

Many young people are unaware that the food and farming sector embraces a variety of jobs other than farm labouring, and there are openings for environmental specialists, animal care workers, horticulturalists and engineers.

Reports show that over two thirds of Welsh farmers are now over the age of 55, and employers are being urged to go into schools to talk to and inspire youngsters to consider a future in farming and/or food production.  Qualifications in both science and business subjects can be very relevant to a career in the sector, and prospects are good, say Careers Wales, with farm managers expecting to earn salaries of around £60,000 and technical staff earning up to £30,000.

Working with the NFU and other training businesses, Careers Wales are hopeful that, despite the current uncertainties surrounding some sectors,  a new generation of Welsh farmers and food producers will help to return the  industry to its former glory.
