Tom Probert – Client Manager – Joined 2015
What do you do / what’s your job about?

I prepare and review accounts and tax computations for clients and work alongside them to help them achieve their goals.

I provide specialist knowledge and experience for farm accounts and other sectors such as property and IFAs.

Why is it important?

I think it is essential to have an accountant who understands your business, and with my experience and the fact that I grew up on a farm, I pride myself in having such an understanding.

How does your work help the client?

My work should help the client achieve their goals, whether that be tax saving or otherwise.

This is in addition to me doing my part to ensure clients meet all statutory and compliance obligations in a timely and efficient manner.

Tell us about an important or rewarding piece of work you’ve been involved with and what you did with it.

I have been involved in several large Capital Allowances claims, helping clients identify qualifying expenditures that would otherwise not have been offset against their profits to help save them tax.

Tell us why the Partners can’t live without you.

Because I see things differently and I have a good understanding of what our clients want, particularly those in the farming sector.

What are the best things about working at Green & Co?

The flexibility, the variety, and of course the people.

Sonia Board – Practice Manager – Joined 2010
What do you do / what’s your job about?

I guess a lot of what I do is be the person to go to if you don’t know where else to go! The partners are very busy, and I can handle many day-to-day decisions/problems without troubling them.

Why is it important?

It is essential because when the partners are not available, staff know that they have someone to go to that can help or point them in the right direction.

How does your work help the client?

There are occasions when clients get frustrated, and I can take ownership of the situation and follow it through which gives them confidence that they are being heard.

Tell us about an important or rewarding piece of work you’ve been involved with and what you did with it.

Sadly, there are occasions when a client is unhappy with the service they receive.

Recently I needed to deal with a complaint and resolved the issue with a positive result.

Tell us why the Partners can’t live without you.

I am sure they could! But I am hopeful that they appreciate my efforts.

Steve Hargreaves – Tax Advisory Manager – Joined 2020
What do you do / what’s your job about?

I handle the technical queries regarding interpretation of tax legislation (including VAT), and applying that technical analysis to client’s circumstances, whether that be company reorganisations, exit strategy, unusual supply for VAT purposes.

I also provide internal technical support to partners and staff on demand and as required.

Why is it important?

The legislation is complex and one of (if not the) most extended tax codes worldwide, and without technical analysis, it would be easy to fall foul of the law.

How does your work help the client?

Ultimately, it provides them with comfort that what they hope to achieve can be done legally and tax efficiently.

Tell us about an important or rewarding piece of work you’ve been involved with and what you did with it.

There have been a few, but I recently worked on a demerger to get the best possible outcome for all concerned.

Tell us why the Partners can’t live without you.

I’m not sure how they lived without me before I arrived. But no, seriously, I can find, link, and interpret legislation and case law and put options into practice that many would not think of.

What are the best things about working at Green & Co?

There are no downsides: good senior management, kind and friendly colleagues, and flexibility where it is needed.

Mags Leck – Client Manager – Joined 1993

(inception – and for many years before that, working for Hugh Green before he formed this practice.)

What do you do / what’s your job about?

Work mainly for Hugh Green, preparing, reviewing, and finalising accounts.

I also complete Accountant’s Certificates, Accountant’s References and other financial enquiries for clients looking to obtain Mortgages or Loans.

Why is it important?

Being of the older generation and old-school in his approach, Hugh needs someone he can rely on and who understands his thinking and methods.

How does your work help the client?

Much of the work I do or oversee is for clients who have been with the practice for many years.

I know how to deal with their books and what the clients expects from us. Their methods of bookkeeping may not be as modern as others, often hand-written or with incomplete information. My experience means I can solve many problems this may lead to in preparing accounts without having to get the partner directly involved.

I always do my best to turn requests for information relating to Mortgages and Loans as quickly as possible, helping clients get quicker results from their lenders.

Tell us why the Partners can’t live without you.

The partners can trust me to work without supervision and use my initiative when needed.

What are the best things about working at Green & Co?

The staff are very friendly, cooperative, and hard-working and the partners and managers are very approachable.

Everyone works well together, and there is no sense of “us and them” between the different staff levels or the teams. There is always a pleasant working atmosphere.
