Swedish Farmers at Forefront of Manure Powered Future
Farmers in Sweden supplying Arla are making the most of their cows’ manure by using it to power up milk lorries.
Currently 81 farmers are involved in the biogas initiative, delivering their manure to biogas plants. The Swedish initiative is helping contribute to a fossil-free fuel future by turning the manure into biogas, which in turn is being used to power milk lorries and city buses, with plans for expansion in the future.
The biogas is a further source of income for the farmers, and the biomass remaining after the manure has been digested can be used as fertiliser.
There seems to be a huge market to tap into, as the Arla farmers in Sweden alone produce what equates to 54 million litres of Diesel.
