Welsh National Emblem at Forefront of Fight Against Alzheimer’s
Powys based bioresearch company, Agroceutical Products is using Wales’ national flower in the fight against Alzheimer’s.
Established in 2012, Agroceutical Products is owned by former sheep farmer Kevin Stephens and grow its daffodils in the Black Mountains of Powys. Daffodils contain galantamine – a compound known to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s symptoms; and being grown 1,000 feet above sea level means they produce more than anywhere else due to the altitude.
The company produces 20kg of galantamine per year, used to help over 90,000 patients across the world. Currently exporting to US and Canada, they plan to branch into New Zealand soon.
Mr. Stephens said:
“It’s amazing to think that the Welsh national emblem, the humble daffodil, has the potential to improve the lives of Alzheimer’s patients across the world, while providing an economic future for hill farmers and their families across Wales”.
